KDVS
KDVS was founded by students of the University of California, Davis
in 1964, who were broadcasting from the laundry room of an all-male dormitory
(women were included). Initially, the signal was carried by "carrier current"
on the AC phone lines and could be received on AM by dormitory residents. In
1968 KDVS became an educational FM broadcast license with 10 watts. In the fall
of that year, the KDVS staff attracted national coverage when they posed nude
for the center photo of their program guide.
KDVS enjoys a reputation for its maverick independence and has historically
rebuffed various efforts to convert its alternative programming into mainstream
radio. Today, with 9,200 watts, student-run KDVS is located in the UC Davis
student union and continues its original mission: to provide the university
with a laboratory for learning broadcast, production and managerial skills,
and to provide its listening audience with diverse, challenging, noncommercial,
freeform radio. Their broadcast includes alternative music and public affairs
programs that deal with issues of poverty, student power, racism and war.
Davis, California is located 11 miles west of Sacramento and 72 miles northeast
of San Francisco with a population of 62,200 residents. A diverse and progressive
university-oriented city, Davis is noted for its small-town style, environmental
awareness, and energy conservation. It has been named one of the healthiest
U.S. communities in which to live and retire. |
